Detailed Information Page for Steer 29B

Steer 29B was born at Whitesell Farms Wagyu on 30-Oct-14 in our fourth year of producing Wagyu influenced beef at our farm on the top of Battleground Mountain in the northwest corner of Cullman County, Alabama. He is a first generation F1 WagyuX steer produced in one of our common breeding patterns; that being the crossing of a premier Wagyu bull, known for marbling and tenderness over a commercial crossbred Angus/Hereford cow.

The sire of 29B is a bull we have used for many years with proven results; Bar R Sanjiro 4P. This bull has great carcass data trials, placing as the Number 3 marbling bull in 2009. His genetic tests are also excellent with a tenderness score of 7 and the preferred fat profile, SCD: AA. In our own experience, he consistently produces amazing results when used with our commercial herd. For more information on this bull, you can follow this link.

The dam of 29B was one of the largest cows we've ever had on our farm. She produced two steers for us, both larged framed calves that grew well. You can find more information on her by following this link to her record in our listing of herd cows.

29B spent his first 205 days in a pasture on our farm with his mother as his main source of sustenance. At weaning on day 205, he weighed 610 lbs, which is the largest weaning weight we've recorded for a Wagyu cross calf in his contemporary group. At weaning, he transitioned to our "Grower Pasture" where he spent the next year on good grass, with access to high quality hay and minerals, and a daily supplemental ration of between 5 and 8 lbs of 13% protein cattle feed. His yearling weight was 779 lbs, once again topping the charts for his class.

At 18 months of age, 29B transitioned to our "Finishing Pasture" at a weight of 1010 lbs. For five months over the spring and summer of 2016, he grazed spring and Bermuda grasses, had high-quality hay, and free choice access to a special formulation of all-natural finishing feed prepared for us by our friends at Hillsboro Feeds, west of Decatur, AL. During this period, he showed solid weight gain of nearly 3.7lbs per day to finish at 1450 lbs live weight. A few more details can be found on our Available Supply page at this link.

29B was harvested on 30-Aug-16 at H & P Meats in South Pittsburgh, TN; the nearest processing plant to Huntsville that caries the USDA Federally Inspected designation. His carcass weight was a very respectable 895 lbs that should yeild nice large steaks. We got good feedback from the owner of H and P Meats on the quality of his finishing. The carcass hung for 17 days before being reduced to primal loins for shipment to Star Super Market in Huntsville, Alabama. It was transported to the supermarket in a refrigerated trailer, following USDA and Health Department guidelines.

Star Super Market began offering steaks, roasts, and ground beef on 17-Sep-16.
