Detailed Information Page for Steer Red-31 (8C)

Steer 8C was born at Whitesell Farms Wagyu on 27-Feb-15 in our fifth year of production of Wagyu influenced beef at our farm on the top of Battleground Mountain in the northwest corner of Cullman County, Alabama. He is a second generation F2 (75%) Wagyu cross steer produced in our tried and trusted breeding pattern; that being the crossing of a premier Wagyu bull, known for growth and size (while not surrendering marbling) over an F1 (50%) Wagyu cross dam that we bred purely for marbling.

The sire of 8C is a bull we have used for several years with proven results; LMR Toshiro 1-3 (723T). This bull has great growth and carcass traits that make him a solid choice for F2 production. His genetic tests are also solid with a tenderness score of 6 and a standard fat profile of SCD: VA. In our experience, he produces great calves when used with our F1 Wagyu cross heifers from the Sanjiro 4P line. For more information on this bull, you can follow this link.

The dam of 8C, WF Ms Motley 6Z, is one of our F1 Wagyu cross heifers we retained from our second year of breeding. This was her second calf and she is proving to be a consistent performer. You can find more information on her, as well as 8C siblings, by following this link to her record in our listing of herd cows.

8C spent his first 205 days in a pasture on our farm with his mother as his main source of sustenance. At weaning on day 205, he weighed 406 lbs which is a little on the light side for his contemporary group. At weaning, he transitioned to our "Grower Pasture" where he advanced to a yearling on good grass, with access to high quality hay and minerals, and a daily supplemental ration of between 5 and 8 lbs of 13% protein cattle feed. He continued to track along with the group during this period and ended with a yearling weight of 493 lbs and a frame score of 3.3.

At 20 months of age, 8C transitioned to our "Finishing Pasture" at a respectable weight of 925 lbs. For five months over the winter and spring of 2017, he grazed Bermuda and rye grasses, had high-quality hay, and free choice access to a special formulation of all-natural finishing feed prepared for us by our friends at Hillsboro Feeds, west of Decatur, AL. During this period, picked up his pace of growth and averaged a gain of nearly 2.5 lbs per day to finish at 1335 lbs live weight. A few more details can be found on our Available Supply page at this link.

8C was harvested on 18-Apr-17 at H & P Meats in South Pittsburgh, TN, the nearest processing plant to our farm that caries the USDA Federally Inspected designation. His carcass weight was 872 lbs. The carcass aged for 17 days before being processed. Both sides were delivered to cold storage for North Alabama Wagyu, our subsidiary focused on providing Whitesell Farms beef through local area Farmer's Markets. It was transported in a refrigerated trailer, following USDA and Health Department guidelines.
